This blog is a place for me to share my passion about reading and my research which is about reading. More specifically I study absorbing stories: experiences with stories that leave the reader unaware of their surroundings, because they are so submerged in its story world that nothing else exists.
Currently I hold a Postdoc research fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, Germany, where I am in the lucky position to investigate people’s absorbing reading experiences. Of course I try, as every other researcher, to publish articles and present at conferences, two aspects of my work I enjoy tremendously (admittedly I enjoy one more than the other, but still…). For me, though, that is not enough. I would like to share my research with a larger group of people than my colleagues, because I believe I am studying a topic that basically everybody can relate to and might find interesting.
My goal for this blog is to post a short piece of text – about the size of a scientific paper abstract – about reading, books, absorption, or the joys of conducting research on these matters, every few weeks.
